Ideas for Creating the Perfect Apartment Home Gym

Working out pays off, but sometimes it's inconvenient to leave your apartment to get a workout in. We understand that you're busy, so you might want to integrate a home gym into your apartment. That way, you can work out whenever you've got a moment! The problem is, you want to respect your neighbors, so you've got to keep the noise level down. In addition, apartments require you to scale down your gym so that it fits your space, which can get tricky. Don't worry, though, with a little bit of creativity, you can create a perfect home gym that's customized to meet the needs of apartment living. Let's talk more about in-apartment gyms, here.  These tips will help you as you create your apartment gym:

Keep Weights Small, and Up Reps

There's nothing worse than living in an apartment and hearing noisy neighbors above you! With that, if you're looking to create a home gym in your apartment, do not get heavy weights. When you drop them and clank them, they'll bother your neighbors, and in addition, you risk damaging your apartment. To keep neighbors happy, your apartment undamaged, and your workout routine strong, try implementing small weights—ten pounds or less—into your workout routine. Do 30, 40, or 50 reps, as to meet your goals without heavy weights.

Invest in a Stationary Bike

Stationary bikes are incredible for apartments because they're quiet! The key to getting a (practically silent) stationary bike is finding one that is operated by a belt, not a chain. So, when you're shopping for stationary bikes, search "belt-driven stationary bikes." The best part about stationary bikes is you can increase your resistance, which allows you to get a good workout. In addition, because they're so quiet, you won't upset any neighbors or other roommates!

Choose Quiet Treadmill for Apartment

If stationary bikes aren't for you and you're more interested in getting a treadmill—or if you want a treadmill in addition to a stationary bike—be sure to get a quiet treadmill for your apartment. Oftentimes, people who live in apartments opt for walking pads, which tend to be quieter than other treadmills. Plus, walking pads are incredibly compact, so you can hide them under a bed or couch if you don't have extra room for a gym.

Try Yoga

You don't have to invest in fancy equipment to have a home gym! Working out in your apartment can be as easy as doing some guided yoga classes via the internet, as all you would have to do is buy a yoga mat and tune into the class. Yoga is a great exercise activity for people who are looking to destress or just ease their way into working out. No matter what level of expertise you have about working out, you can find a yoga class that meets you where you are, so and from there, you can get into more intense exercise.

Do Online Workout Classes on a Noise Cancelling Mat

Yoga has a very low impact, so it's quiet. But some workout classes are a little bit more intense, which can bring more noise. Remember, you're looking to work out as quietly as possible in an apartment, so if you decide to do an online workout class other than yoga, you've got to invest in a noise-canceling gym mat. While these gym mats won't eliminate every noise—that is to say, you should still avoid jumping and other disruptive movements—they'll eliminate some, which your neighbors will be thankful for. Again, this option is perfect for anyone looking to eliminate clutter because you can hide the noise-canceling mat once you're done working out for the day.

Increase Resistance with a Weighted Vest

Let's say you bought a treadmill or a stationary bike, and you've installed it in your apartment. The best way to increase the burn while working out on these machines is by wearing a weighted vest. Weighted vests come in all sizes, like 4 pounds, 8 pounds, 15 pounds, and more, so you can find the size that works for you. (You should never wear a vest that weighs more than 10% of your body weight for safety purposes.) Even if you don't have a treadmill or stationary bike, though, you can wear the weighted vest while you're doing simple household chores—it's a great way to get a workout in without thinking!
